What a choghadiya actually is
Take sunrise, take sunset, and cut the interval between them into eight equal parts. Each part is a choghadiya — literally four ghatis, a ghati being a sixtieth of the day — and each is named for one of the seven classical planets, read in Chaldean order. The night is cut the same way, from sunset to the next morning’s sunrise, into eight more.
The first period of the day belongs to the day’s own lord, which is where the names of the weekdays come from: Sunday begins with the Sun, Monday with the Moon. That single rule generates the whole table, which is why this page computes it rather than looking it up.
An eighth is not ninety minutes. It is an eighth of your day, so it runs about 95 minutes in a Delhi June and about 80 in a Delhi December, and longer or shorter again the further you are from the equator. It depends entirely on sunrise, which means an app that is two minutes out on sunrise is two minutes out on every cell above. The method →
The seven names, and what each is held to mean
Amrit, Shubh and Labh are the three counted favourable; Chal is neutral; Udveg, Rog and Kaal are the three counted otherwise. The words are descriptive rather than predictive — Labh is “gain”, Rog is “illness”, Udveg is “agitation” — and the tradition uses them to choose when to begin something rather than to forecast what will happen.
This page prints the quality as a word beside every cell and never as a colour alone. A fifth of the men who will read it cannot reliably separate the green from the rose.
